Leigh Berryman is a seasoned drug development and executive leader with more than 35 years of experience guiding global development programs across the life sciences industry. As Fractional Chief Development Officer, he leads development strategy and execution from discovery through clinical readiness.
Mr. Berryman has led or contributed to hundreds of IND and first in human programs worldwide, with deep expertise in regulatory strategy, toxicology, program design, and translational execution. His career spans senior executive leadership roles, CRO operations, and hands on scientific oversight across multiple therapeutic modalities.
He is recognized for disciplined development planning, risk mitigation, and capital efficient advancement of complex programs toward clinical milestones.
As a Partner in L2 Consulting, Leigh Berryman is a serial Chief Executive Officer who has provided leadership to companies in Europe, North America and Asia. Trained as a toxicologist, he has been involved and directed drug development programs for over 35 years and has led or contributed to over 300 IND applications and first-in-man programs across Europe and North America. In particular, he was a lead scientist for one of the pioneering recombinant products, rhEPO. Recent activities have been in the field of gene therapies where he has designed and executed multiple (>8) program with gene therapies for the treatment of cancer (oncolytic vaccines) and the treatment of genetic-based orphan diseases.
With this scientific foundation, Leigh progressed into executive management in the mid- 90’s, founding and ultimately taking public (TSX:THE), his own company LAB Research Inc. Thereafter he provided turnaround leadership to Ricerca LLC (in Ohio), a 300+ person company, doubling revenues and enabling capital investment for growth and M&A activity over a 2-year period. He stepped into another CEO role in Singapore (Maccine Pte. Ltd.) and, over a 6-year period, oversaw increasing year-on-year profitability. Since return to North America in 2014, he has undertaken a range of mandates including interim CEO positions, business planning / fund-raising for early stage companies, as well as a number of core scientific roles in advisory and consulting roles to design development programs with a focus on cost and timing to enable evaluation of risk and maximise return on required investment capital.
